Max Planck Institute
Max Planck Institute for Solar System Research, Germany
“It is not enough that an Institute works properly. It must also be the material expression of an idea, a conviction.” (Jonas Salk)
The Max Planck Institute for Solar System Research is dedicated to the scientific investigation of the solar system – the planets and moons as well as the sun, its heliosphere and its interaction with the Earth.
One of the most significant and influential research institutes worldwide, the MPISSR leads the field in internationally competitive, extra-terrestrial research and now requires a new facility on the North Campus of the Georg-August University site to accommodate staff and research programmes for three academic departments, providing new laboratories, specialist workshops, a library, an assembly hall, seminar rooms and break-out spaces, as well as accommodation for staff and guests, day care facilities, an exhibition foyer and a cafeteria.

The design pays particular attention to the strategic arrangement of the constituent elements of the Institute, in terms of their functional arrangement, spatial differentiation and efficient connection between the three department areas. The concept delivers a clear diagram defining the building’s core functions as well as a strong sense of orientation and connection, both physical and visually. Our aim has been to instill within this academic community a new sense of collective identity, creating a physical environment which celebrates the calibre of research and innovation for which the Max Planck Institute is so renowned.
